My intention with this work was to break away from the compositional repetition of other bush paintings and give the work a strong structural foreground with which to hang a more rhythmical patina. I don’t generally place too many vertical forms in the foreground, as this tends to inhibit the eye from moving into the in between spaces. But I liked the idea of challenging those concepts by placing an odd number of tree trunks in the close foreground. The viewer then feels as if they are surrounded by the bush and are standing amongst the trees rather than viewing it from a distance. I love the art of Cressida Campbell and was inspired by her Australian bush woodblock prints that she infuses with earthy colours and practical design.
