I love the idea of exploring a neutral colour palette, and the subject matter of black and white cows in a winter landscape was the perfect narrative to develop the tonal qualities of darks and lights. I tried to imagine the balance of tones if a black and white photograph was taken, and tried to work up the darkest shades to complement the white sky and light to mid grey stone colours. I use a combination of layering transparent greys with opaque whites and creams. The paintings of Cy Twombly are an absolute inspiration and I often have one of his books open to study the mark making of his abstract works.
