The High Plains in Western Victoria provide natural pastures for cattle and although much of the High Country has been allocated to National Parks, there is still plenty of grazing country around the perimeter. The higher areas are rich with native grassed paddocks. The lower areas were often cleared by the early settlers. The vegetation is still sparse, and the gum trees are low growing and hardy. Whenever I visit this region on my way to the ski slopes or on horseback, there is often a wintery feel to the country and it lends itself to a neutral colour palette of paynes greys. These landscape paintings are strongly influenced by the iconic works of Fred Williams and the large-scale abstracts of Sophie Cape.
