Emerald Cove was painted together with Opal cove and employs the same watercolour techniques using an atomiser and transparent layers of colour to create the watery effects. These paintings begin their life on a flat surface and permanent inks are poured over particular areas of the primed linen. The stretcher is manipulated to control the flow of ink across the surface. Masking tape is then applied and cut into shapes to create the stencils that are affected by the ink as it dries. This process is quite freeing because I never quite know how the ink will dry. I have to let go of the control and allow the ink to settle. This then determines how the rest of the composition will develop. A lot of the white primed linen is revealed underneath the painted forms and shapes. The perspective of the ‘birds-eye view’ gives a delightful space to create interesting perspectives. The vignettes of umbrellas, towel patterns, buckets, figures, chairs, birds, and text are all used to create playful juxtapositions. The diagonal composition gives the work some dynamic energy and the clear turquoise water is cool and inviting. Cy Twombly’s scribble paintings are a strong influence in these works. I love his emotive use of line and space with layered marks that hide and reveal.
