Fields of Grey was first drawn up in willow charcoal directly onto the primed linen. This stage is where the composition is worked out. Tonal variations from very light feathered edges and heavy dark areas are created using charcoal and spray layers and dry white rags for succumbling. Once I am happy with the feel of the work, I use black transparent acrylic paint and lots of medium to apply it over the top of the charcoal using wet and dry rags to add marks and soften edges until finally all of the charcoal is mixed into the medium and forms a paint.
