Moonee Beach Nature Reserve on the Central Coast of NSW is accessed by Habitat Drive, a road that is lined with beautiful weeping eucalypts that frame serene views over the mouth of Moonee Creek. It is the traditional homeland of the Gumbaynggirr people and the nearby “Look At Me Now” headland is an important and powerful Aboriginal heritage site.
When I visit a new place for the first time, I like to absorb the environment in quiet contemplation so that I can remember the feelings that it gives me. I am learning to tune into my senses and find subtle ways of connecting with the landscape that has its own unique ambiance. Watching the afternoon sun filter through the trees, the reflection in the water and the changing light on the surfaces of leaves and native bushes is such a delight. I am trying to paint those things that are ethereal, mysterious and give meaning to the landscape before me. My work is ‘place based’ and my aim with this painting is to explore the atmospheric in the natural environment in order to describe the memory of being in that place.
