The wild brumbies of the Alpine National Parks have been an historical cultural symbol o the early settlers and pioneers in the Victorian high country. They have spurned books and movies and ‘The Man from Snowy River’ is a favourite of mine. It romances the bush and the landscape cinematography is just beautiful.
This work celebrates the iconic brumbies and the patterns of trees and shrubs that are scattered over the high plains and remote mountains of the Great Dividing Range. I have developed the composition by revealing and burying layers of marks and patterns and working with both transparent and opaque neutral colour palette. The playful brumbies provide a moving focal point and help move the eye up through the composition.
