On a recent horse-riding trip in South East Queensland we set up camp at Rosewood, a small rural community just below Cunningham’s Gap. The bush here is quite dry but there is plenty of colour that can be found with close observation. There is so much to take in on the back of a good horse as it makes its way through the bush, up woody hillsides, across vast open paddocks and down into gently flowing creeks. The banks are lined with native bushes, tiny flowering plants and overhanging paperbark. In this painting I was looking to combine the distant dry grasses with a foreground of native gums. Occasionally a title arrives before the painting begins and I liked the idea of using the description of an earthy rose colour and the location of the campsite.
