Occasionally I like to develop a composition without an horizon line. It changes the feel and gives the work a more abstracted design. The early stages involve lots of charcoal to develop the lights and darker tones, then washes of neutral transparent greys are brushed over the top and the painting frame is manipulated to control the flow of the drips. Rags and sponges are also a great way of introducing soft areas to contrast the drama of the diagonal composition. Other tools are used to explore new ways of building up texture and tone. My intention was to create flow in the work so the eye can move from the top left down through to the bottom right. And the horizontal line gives the painting some stability and provides a way in for the brumbies.
