I love working in squares, and this canvas is almost square. It offers up a range of challenges though. The composition can get awkward as there is no defined length or width, but there is also a variety of solutions and interesting ways of resolving the square format. I was painting this piece when the 50-year Beatles tribute music was playing over the radio and the ABC was interviewing a Beatles historian. Richard Fidler was discussing the lyrics to the song “Tangerine Trees and Marmalade Jam”. It just so happened that the painting had a lot of orange/tangerine colours in the palette and I thought that the title was appropriate.
