The red and yellow surf life saving flags are up and the notice board reads: slip, slop, slap. This is to remind beach goers to ‘slip’ on a shirt, ‘slop’ on sunscreen and ‘slap’ on a hat – to avoid skin damage from the harsh Australian sun. Paddle boarding is a popular water pastime and a lovely way to experience the beauty of the Queensland coastline. This painting is the sequel to Tequila Bay with a similar colour palette but a dramatic change in composition. Metallic silver leaf has been applied to suggest the light reflecting off the sand and sparkling water. Decorative patterning is a technique that I have used extensively in the beach genre and my influences stem from Indian miniature paintings and the simple narratives in ‘naïve’ art.
