Over the summer months, Australian beaches can get very hot in the middle of the day. The white sand gets so hot that beach goers need to wear shoes to walk around!  In this painting I used the orange/red palette to symbolise the hot conditions and the contrasting cool blues of the water to invite families to wander down to the waters edge and cool down in the gentle waves of the sheltered Bay. The large checkered patterns on the beach are derived from the designs on beach towels and blankets so often seen in the array of Australian beach paraphernalia.  Life saving flags are iconic on our patrolled beaches and a signify a safe place to swim.
