My street is lined with low growing hybrid gumtrees that grow the large iconic ‘May Gibbs’ gumnuts. They begin their life in heavy clusters of light greens and flower en masse in beautiful hot pinks and vivid reds.  The botanic name is Summer Beauty and the crazy lorikeets love them.  The nuts eventually turn a dark chocolate and in the winter months, I often collect the clusters at this stage as they have lovely organic forms and sculptural shapes.  These eucalypt varieties have huge elongated broad leaves that turn varying shades of earthy greens to creams and browns as they begin to drop from the trees.  In the height of summer the trees are so heavy with flowers and nuts that their branches bend and break with the weight of the blossoms.
